• Question: how long does it take to become an engineer

      Hi Amy,

      An Engineering degree takes 3 year to obtain a bachelors or 4 years to get a masters. I guess after that you can call yourself an engineer but there is still a lot more training that goes on once you’ve chosen your career direction.

      For example, after doing my undergraduate in engineering I also did a PhD (which is a higher type of degree), which took another 3 years. There is also something called Engineering Chartership, which is an internationally recognised qualification: https://targetpostgrad.com/subjects/built-environment/getting-from-masters-to-chartered-engineer-status

      So in summary 3-4 years at University and then some more ‘on-the-job’ training depending what direction you chose to take.

      I did a masters in engineering which took 4 years, it is helpful to do a masters if you eventually want to become a chartered engineer which can take a few more year of on the job training.

      Hi Amy,

      It takes some time… the undergraduate takes approx. 4 years, if you then want to become a certain type of engineer then you’d need to do some other courses (Masters, or Doctorate) and they could be anything from 1 to 5 extra years on top of the 4.

      Takes a few years for a first degree, then you can do more like a Masters or a PhD which takes an extra 1-4 years…

      I guess whatever time it takes you to complete a degree in engineering. My bachelors was around 4 years.
