I think, to simplify, an engineer should be able to find solutions to problems. Doesn’t matter how.
Even if the solution is a bit rough, you can always go back and refine it.

An engineer has to be able to create/find solutions to problems. Creativity is really important as this will allow you to explore different directions in order to get the best possible solution!

I think the ability to problem solve, or come up with solutions to questions, or make/create/conceptualise something that has a benefit to others, and be able to follow that through.

Critical thinking is top of the list for me and also translating thoughts into words is something I have always found challenging.

Something I would recommend reading up on is Design Thinking (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_thinking) and Systems Thinking (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systems_engineering)
